PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (May 17, 2017) – STAR, Inc. has been awarded a lawn care contract by the Ohio Department of Transportation, expanding its current contract from 10 to 20 bypass properties in Lawrence County.

Scioto Training and Recreation (STAR), Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation with the goal of putting people with developmental disabilities into the workforce. Closely associated with the Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities, STAR, Inc. operates the County Board's Community Employment Program. The program assists about 60 individuals in the community currently .

Prior to its contract in Lawrence County, STAR, Inc. serviced 20 bypass properties in Scioto County for nearly three years.

“I think it’s wonderful that ODOT is working with us to help get people with developmental disabilities working in their communities,” said Kelly Hunter, director of adult services at STAR, Inc. “It’s good when local and state businesses partner with us, and look to us for work.”

In addition to the latest ODOT contract, STAR, Inc. also contracts with other local employers, such as grounds-keeping services to General Electric Aviation plant in Peebles, and janitorial services to OSCO Industries in Portsmouth.

“Just like anyone else, our people have a lot of talent and a lot of enthusiasm,” Hunter said. “It’s an attitude. The number one thing people look for, I think, in a good employee is attitude and enthusiasm, and the desire to contribute. Our folks have all of that.”
