PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (May 30, 2017) – The Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities has received a generous grant from Portsmouth Elks Lodge No. 154 to purchase new equipment for individuals with cerebral palsy.
“Through the local Elks Lodge, the State Cerebral Palsy Grant Board was able to apply for, and received a $5,000 grant for a piece of technology to be funded,” Chad Phipps, service and support administration director for the Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities and chairman of the Portsmouth Elks board, said.
Phipps said this is the fifth year they have received the Elks grant, which has helped fund equipment such as an active bicycle, therapeutic swings, and adaptive fishing pole attachments.
The grant they year will be used to purchase an interactive smart board. Dr. Tammy Guthrie, director of school programs for SCBDD, said she has used the smart boards in the past, and said they will provide an opportunity for students to move, touch, and interact with their learning. She said it’s very helpful for developing high-motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
“One of the goals at the top of my list has been to provide interactive smart boards to students. This means the difference between teaching the children as we always have, and helping them step up and develop skills that will prepare them for the 21st century,” Guthrie said. “Without contributions like this from the Elks, we wouldn’t be able to do that.”
