Executive Development Program Prepares Leaders in Developmental Disability Services
PORTSMOUTH, OH – On November 14, 2024, five staff members from Scioto County Developmental Disabilities (SCDD) graduated from the Ohio Association of County Boards (OACB) Executive Development Program (EDP), marking their advancement in professionalism and leadership in the field of developmental disabilities.
The EDP, designed to prepare professionals and enhance leadership skills in Ohio’s developmental disabilities sector, emphasizes the improvement of service quality for individuals with developmental disabilities. Participants earn 112 Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDUs), meeting Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities requirements and fulfilling the advanced curriculum for administrators outlined in the Superintendent Certification Standards rule (OAC 5123-5-03).
"It is a great honor to represent SCDD and learn from the best leaders in the state at the Executive Development Program,” said SSA Andrea Dryden. “The program is transformative and prepares future and current leaders within our field. EDP not only educates us about becoming effective leaders; but teaches us how to generate engagement and help teams feel empowered. It truly is an honor to be a part of the EDP class of 2024."
The program runs over a series of two-day monthly sessions in Columbus, Ohio, from January through April and August through November. SSA Eddie Davis reflected on his time in the program, stating, "EDP has been a fantastic experience. It's been an opportunity to build relationships with County Board personnel from every corner of Ohio; and an opportunity to take an in-depth look at ourselves and the work we do. I'm thankful for the opportunity and would do it all over in a heartbeat!"
A key component of EDP is the Group Capstone Project, where participants collaborate on solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing the developmental disabilities service system. This year-long initiative culminates in a final presentation before peers, distinguished guests, and department leaders. Completion of the Capstone Project is required for graduation. During the graduation, awards were given for superior projects. SSAs Andrea Dryden and Eddie Davis were a part of the Group Capstone Project that won the award for best overall project with the topic of Ensuring Greater Access to Healthcare and Healthcare Providers.
"The Executive Development Program (EDP) has given me the opportunity to learn and grow not only as a leader, but as a person, over the last year,” said Early Childhood Developmental Specialist Erica Culver. “Having worked with all ages throughout my career in the DD field, I have a unique perspective when it comes to understanding the different systems and services. I have gained valuable insight into the history of DD services and gained a new perspective into my own self-awareness. I will be presenting my project; Creating a more Representative, Equitable, & Inclusive DD System, with professionals from several other counties throughout Ohio, to wrap up the 2024 session of EDP."
Founded in 1984, the Ohio Association of County Boards of Developmental Disabilities (OACB) supports Ohio’s 88 county boards through advocacy, communication, professional development, and technical assistance. Today, OACB serves more than 600 board members and thousands of professionals in Ohio’s developmental disabilities service system.
"EDP has been a great learning experience along with a wonderful opportunity for networking and growing as an employee,” shared Amanda Literal, SCDD Fiscal Specialist. “Over the last 11 months, we have had many opportunities to be pushed out of our comfort zones. We learned to come together and work with others from all different regions of the state within the DD community."
Tammy Guthrie, SCDD’s Director of School Programs and Vern Riffe School Principal, also praised the experience: “The Executive Development Program has been an incredible opportunity to develop leadership skills and build connections within our field. I’m grateful for the board’s commitment to my professional growth.”
Held every two years, the program will next take place in January 2026. Congratulations to all EDP graduates of the Scioto County Developmental Disabilities staff. We’re proud of your achievements and look forward to seeing the future positive impacts you’ll make in our community.
