Walk-A-Thon Kicks Off Special Olympics Season

Special Olympics Walk-A-Thon 2024-Students

The Annual Special Olympics Walk-a-Thon fundraiser was held on September 12, 2024 at Tracy Park in Portsmouth. This annual fundraising event organized by SCDD, intended to support DD athletic programs, was a resounding success. SCDD would like to send thanks to the dedicated efforts of many individuals and organizations who contributed to the success of the day.

SOCF staff were stationed at key points on Chillicothe Street and Gay Street, where they collected donations from generous community members. Their hard work, coupled with the participation of event-goers, contributed significantly to the day's achievements. SOCF staff also cooked and helped serve lunch to all those who walked along with their staff.

The event was officially kicked off by the Portsmouth West Junior High Choir, under the direction of Sonja Jarrells, who sang the National Anthem. The students then stayed and walked with the athletes. SCDD Coach Rita Arthur welcomed everyone to the fundraiser and with the help of the athletes recited the athlete’s creed: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” Then the Walk-a-Thon commenced.

A special highlight of the event was the gift basket donated by Scioto Residential Services. This gesture of support was greatly appreciated and added to the excitement and appeal of the fundraiser. Additionally, the upbeat music provided by KC, kept the spirits high throughout the day.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to making this event a success. The combined efforts of individuals, staff, family, and friends were invaluable. Through various fundraising activities, including donations collected by SOCF staff, pledges collected by athletes, t-shirt sales, and other contributions, we are thrilled to announce that the event raised a total of $3056.65.
