Adams, Mantell appointed to SCDD Board

Bill Adams and Tony Mantell were sworn into office Thursday, Jan. 22, as members of the Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities.
Adams is a self-advocate who teaches other people with disabilities how to better advocate for themselves. This is the first time in Scioto County history that a service recipient has served as a board member.
Adams has extensive experience within the community, serving as a volunteer with students at Vern Riffe School and the former Carousel preschool. He has served as president of People First Ohio, influencing state legislation affecting people with disabilities. He has received SCDD services since 1993, and is a graduate of Shawnee State University.
“From my experience, I am hoping that I lend my voice that would help people young and old that we serve,” Adams said, “because I know what it is like receiving services from Scioto County.”
Mantell is a retired educator, having served in leadership positions at both New Boston and Clay local school districts. It was a job in which he served the community, and it was something he enjoyed. As a principal, Mantell often worked with Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities in helping students and families build educational plans and goals.
“When I retired, I missed that. I missed those connections and being able to help people solve problems and working with people,” Mantell said. “Hopefully I can share when the time is appropriate, when there is a need.”
With two new members, the Board is truly beginning a new era. The Board also elected Bill Rockwell as president, Michael Arnett as vice president, and Jeff Kleha as recording secretary.
“Board members truly give of themselves when they join Scioto County Board of DD,” said Superintendent Matt Purcell. “This responsibility they take on is immense and one for which we are truly grateful.”
