Students from Scioto County's Vern Riffe School were joined by local developmental disability advocates at the Carousel Center in Portsmouth, Ohio, for a viewing of the Ohio Statehouse Advocacy Day livestream.
The annual event featured narratives from guest speakers recounting their personal experiences, underscoring the necessity of advocating for DD accessibility and rights. It also highlighted the continuing efforts of DD advocates statewide.
Local Advocate, Christopher Cooley, noted the significance of the livestream option and how it broadens inclusivity.
“So many were previously unable to attend. Maybe they have health issues or it’s too far for them to travel. There are also limits on capacity to be there in-person. Now, virtual attendance allows everyone to be included.”
During the March 14, 2024, regular meeting of the Scioto County Commissioners, a resolution was adopted by the commissioners to formally acknowledge March as DD Awareness Month. Local advocates and Vern Riffe School students congregated at the Scioto County Courthouse concourse. Student Emily Stevens accepted the proclamation on behalf of DD individuals countywide.
“It’s always honorable to have people who are in public office recognize the significance and contributions of people who are in the disability community,” said Scioto County DD Board Member Bill Adams.
Events were scheduled to honor DD Awareness Month throughout March, notably the 11th Annual Hardwood Heroes Celebrity Basketball Game Fundraiser was held on March 28 at Shawnee State University. Open to the public, this event featured local celebrities facing off against teams from the Special Olympics VRS Cardinals and the adult Shooting Stars.
