The mission of the Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities
(SCBDD) is, “Together, we build meaningful lives”. This is the goal of every
staff member for every individual with developmental disabilities served. In
order to enhance this mission, staff has participated in various training
opportunities throughout the state of Ohio.
Jon Harris, behavior support coordinator for SCBDD and Liz Stevens, plan
coordinator for STAR, Inc., recently graduated from a statewide training
session known as the Good Life.
Harris said the program is a stringent focus on person-centered planning
that trains participants to focus on collaboration and respect.
“We are part of a movement that is taking place all across the state of
Ohio,” Harris explained. “The program not only provides the tools for
participants to learn and practice the Good Life training, but also goes
further and trains participants to teach and promote the practice within their
own organizations, creating sustainable, positive culture.”
The training consists of 20 classes, spread across four months and is facilitated
by Ohio Association of County Board (OACB) Members Pete Moore and Willie Jones.
The program is part of the OACB Professional Development Series and focuses on enabling others to live a good life
– their good life.
“The training is
meant to create a relationship between staff and those they support to help
build the good life that is unique to their wants and needs,” said Stevens.
The program has been
described as ‘transformational’ by focusing on relationships working both ways
and putting and keeping the focus on an individual’s strengths.
Monroe commended Harris and Stevens on their recent graduation from
the Good Life program.
“Partnership is one of our strategic values,” said SCBDD
Superintendent Julie Monroe, “We are confident that the investment will yield
many positive benefits to those we serve and others associated with our
programs.”
