Named in honor of long-time State Representative Vernal G. Riffe, Jr., the Vern Riffe School has been providing school services to children with developmental disabilities in Scioto County since 1953.   After completing assessment process with their local school district and an eligbility assessment with SCBDD Intake, students ages 5 to 21 may be enrolled at Vern Riffe School.

Each classroom has six to eight students who are instructed by a teacher and an aide. Every child has an Individualized Education Program designed with parent/guardian participation.  According to the needs of each student, nursing services, service coordination, and therapy (speech, occupational and physical) are also available.

Students are taught basic academics and daily living skills.  They also participate in physical education classes and extracurricular activities.  These can vary from year to year.

The school is located at 2619 Gallia Street, Portsmouth, Ohio.
